Martyr Captain Vikram Batra Martyrdom Day: A Patriot So Fierce, He Wrote 'Jai Bharat' in His Entire University Exam

Jai Bharat... Jai Bharat": The Untold Story of Martyr Captain Vikram Batra
Palampur/Chandigarh | July 7
On Captain Vikram Batra’s martyrdom day, Amar Ujala engaged in a heartfelt conversation with his father, Mr. G.L. Batra, who shared moving insights and untold memories of the braveheart.

When He Wrote "Jai Bharat... Jai Bharat" Instead of Exam Answers
Captain Batra’s love for the nation wasn’t just strong—it flowed through every fiber of his being. During his MA English exam at Punjab University, he wrote only "Jai Bharat... Jai Bharat" in his answer sheet, overwhelmed by his love for the nation.

“He went to give the exam, but he was so immersed in patriotism that he wrote only Jai Bharat across the paper,” said G.L. Batra.

Born With a Blessing – Named ‘Luv’ and ‘Kush’
Before Vikram and his twin brother were born, the Batra family had two daughters – Seema (living in Mandi) and Nutan (a teacher in Delhi). Their mother, Kamal Kanta Batra, was deeply religious and devoted to Lord Ram. When twins were born, they were lovingly named Luv and Kush. Later, for school registration, their names were changed to Vikram and Vishal.

From Palampur to CDS: A Journey of Discipline and Courage
Educated initially at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Palampur, Vikram Batra excelled in academics, sports, and debates. In 1993-94, he joined DAV College, Chandigarh, where he enrolled in NCC. That’s where his flame of patriotism turned into a burning fire.

MA in English – Just a Pathway to Join the Army
Though he enrolled in MA English at Punjab University in 1996, it was only to get hostel accommodation and prepare for the CDS exam. He was allotted a room in Hostel No. 1. He cleared CDS with flying colors and joined the Indian Army, leaving his MA midway.
