Unique Village in Spiti: Entire Population Lives in a Single House, Now Connected with 4G
Kakati village, located about 10 kilometers from Kaza in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, is counted among the most unique villages in India. The entire population of the village lives in a single house. While official records show the village land as only 15 bighas, in reality, the entire village resides in a 300-year-old mud house made of stones and clay. This house is both the identity and the home of the entire village.
The house is home to Chering Namgyal, his wife, and their two children, representing the fifth generation of the family. The mud house is an excellent example of Himalayan architecture. It remains naturally cool in summers and retains warmth in winters. Even when the outside temperature drops 20 degrees Celsius below zero, the house provides safe and relatively warm shelter for the family.
Interestingly, this single-house village is now connected to Digital India. BSNL has installed a 4G tower here. Chering Namgyal says that earlier, news used to reach them after weeks, but now they are connected to the whole world via mobile.
According to ADC Kaza Shikha Simtia, Kakati is a registered village, and it is claimed to be the first village in India where the entire population resides in a single house.
