Swachh Survekshan 2024-25: Shimla Falls Behind, Theog Emerges as Cleanest Town in Himachal
New Delhi / Shimla:
The Government of India on Thursday announced the results of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. President Droupadi Murmu presented accolades to leading cities in diverse categories during a grand ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the event witnessed the presence of Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and several other distinguished dignitaries.
This annual survey ranks cities across India based on cleanliness, waste management, innovation, and citizen participation.
Shimla's Disappointing Decline
Once known as the "Queen of Hills," Shimla has suffered a major setback in cleanliness rankings this year.
While last year Shimla was ranked 188th, it has now slipped to 347th position, raising serious concerns about the city’s sanitation and waste management systems.
Theog Leads the Way
Surprisingly, the small hill town of Theog has emerged as the cleanest city in Himachal Pradesh.
Nadaun secured the second position, while Shimla settled at third — but the sharp fall in its national ranking is a wake-up call for local administrators.
Urgent Need for Improvement
Experts suggest that poor waste disposal systems, lack of civic responsibility, and inadequate cleanliness drives may be the primary reasons behind Shimla’s decline.
The Shimla Municipal Corporation must now take corrective actions and ensure better on-ground execution to restore the city’s pride.
