One Doctor, Two Years, 300+ Surgeries: AIIMS Bilaspur Transforms Kidney Care and Plastic Surgery Services
Bilaspur: In a remarkable example of dedication and medical excellence, Dr. Navneet Sharma, the sole faculty member in the Department of Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bilaspur, has successfully performed over 300 major and 350 minor surgeries in just two years. Notably, he has carried out more than 100 AV fistula surgeries, crucial for dialysis access in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.
This breakthrough has significantly reduced patients’ dependence on tertiary hospitals in Chandigarh or Delhi for critical procedures.
Beyond Cosmetic Surgery: Addressing Complex Medical Needs
The department has expanded far beyond cosmetic procedures, playing a vital role in:
- Treating severe trauma injuries
- Burn surgeries and post-burn reconstruction
- Congenital deformities
- Cancer-related reconstructive surgery
- Chronic wounds and microvascular nerve repairs
Plastic surgery procedures from head to toe are now available in Bilaspur — including skin grafting, brachial plexus repair, hand injury treatments, and more.
Collaborative Excellence Across Departments
Working in coordination with departments like Oncosurgery, Dentistry, ENT, and Endocrinology, the department has:
- Performed reconstructive surgeries post-oral cancer
- Treated over 200 diabetic foot patients in joint care programs
Advancing Pediatric Surgery
Children with rare congenital conditions such as cleft lip and palate, syndactyly, polydactyly, and ear deformities have also received successful surgical interventions — a service previously only available outside the state.
Training the Future: MCh Residency Program
AIIMS Bilaspur has launched an MCh residency program in plastic surgery, laying a strong foundation for training future specialists to serve hilly states like Himachal Pradesh.
